Do I need an entire manuscript to attend the retreat?
Not at all; however, you do need to have a work-in-progress. Especially, for your included one-on-one coaching session. See more below on what this includes.
How much one-on-one time do I get?
During the retreat, you’ll be able to sign-up and schedule a one-on-one coaching session for your work-in-progress. There will only be time for one coaching session during the retreat, but ample opportunity to schedule in a follow-up with one of us (which we recommend) post-retreat.
How are coaching sessions conducted?
60 mins total which includes all of any of the following:
- Talking and trouble-shooting through your work in real-time and any hurdles you’re encountering with your work-in-progress.
- Artist Mindset, Imposter Syndrome, Creating a way of working on the book, short story, work of poems, etc… in a way that fits into your current life demands.
- Exploring the following possibilities in your work: voice, characterization, setting, character arc, story arc, plot, timeline & arrangement of information/memories (non-fiction) handling deep emotional terrain, point-of-view, etc…
- Story concept-what are the qualities of the story in progress that are attractive to a target readership? What are some elements you want to focus on during the retreat to make the most of your time in Tulum? What will need a longer exploration after Tulum.
- Staying open to the inspiration that comes while being away from home.
You can also pay extra for a review of up to 50 pages by Britta that needs to be submitted at least 6 weeks ahead of the retreat.
Can my friend/partner/family accompany me on this retreat?
This retreat only allows your friend/partner/family member who is also registered and participating in the retreat with a work in progress. Because our focus is on writing and receiving inspiration within the landscape of Tulum it can often be distracting to have non-writers on a retreat and can take away from the focus that this experience is offering. If you have a writer friend coming, they are most welcome and you can indicate if you want to share the 2-bedroom apartments we have available with them.
What if I have dietary restrictions?
Both Britta and Kellie are allergic to gluten and are aware of how important it is to avoid foods that make you sick. While we aim to accommodate as best we can with offering different local restaurant options that offer potential alternatives, please keep in mind we are in foreign country with different cultural approaches towards accommodating dietary restrictions.We cannot guarantee that any restaurant or establishment is complying perfectly with dietary restrictions. However, the food we provide during the morning writing sessions will adhere with the dietary preferences writers have indicated, as long as the local grocery store has such foods available. You also have the option to shop at the local grocery store and to use the kitchen in the apartment you’ll stay in. Britta has had good experiences in Mexico with not getting sick, but she’ll also provide guidance for folks feeling wary as she’s a seasoned world traveler and married to a Mexican!
REFUND POLICY
Because fees are paid to local providers for accommodation rentals, deposits, etc…we do not offer refunds, unless we have to cancel the retreat. The refund will always be after card processing fees. By registering for this event, you agree that you have read and understand the refund policy for this event. If you wish to exchange places with another author wanting to come, you’ll need to receive approval in writing and we will need to see proof that the other writer has reimbursed you for the retreat fees before we can provide the exchange to them. Exchanges are not allowed after January 20, 2026.
