Refine your writing voice in the stillness and hush of mid-winter, Japanese-style.
Let your writing progress as you explore your past — and/or the memories of your characters — through the lens of voice and point-of-view. In this small, intimate workshop of just ten students, you’ll dive deep and resurface refreshed, carrying new ideas about voice, perspective, and the stories that shape your writing.
We’ll usher in the first hints of spring as an entry point into reflection: how our histories, dreams, and quiet inner worlds inform memoir, fiction, poetry and everything between. Drawing on Britta’s memories growing up in Japan, we will immerse ourselves in the energy of light, snow, and slow-moving explorations cradled around 冬季 (fuyu) winter.
Invoke your power within during this season of hibernation and slow growth. Britta will infuse each session with exercises inspired by her seaside home in Maborikaigan, Japan. Come gather around this hearth of voice exploration — 90 minutes each month, plus one-to-one feedback sessions and personalized guidance on 5,000 to 15,000 words of your writing.
Who is this class for?
All levels of writers are welcome to join us as this is a completely open level class with zero experience required. Because this class focuses on voice and point-of-view in a variety of genres, but primarily memoir, fiction and poetry, it will be best suited to writers pursuing one of those broad genres. Our class readings will feature a variety of genres of writers to inspire our explorations.
This class is especially well suited to writers feeling like they aren’t getting the traction with their work, voice-wise, and want a completely craft-focused course that will allow them to ease into fine-tuning the POV in their works in progress.
Class Schedule
Live sessions are held on Fridays, 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. CST, via Zoom.

Each class will be recorded for participants who cannot attend live. We encourage everyone who registers to attend live, though, for maximum opportunities for participation, interaction, and the ability to ask questions live.

Because space is limited to 10 students, early registration is encouraged.
Cancellation Policy
Refunds are not available except in the event of class cancellation. Refunds will not include the processing fees charged by our card processor. With written permission, students are allowed to exchange their class place with another writer (see class contract for more information).
